The Diabetes Research Group at the Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, has been led by three nationally known investigators since 1994. Each have published extensively in health services research and epidemiology. Drs. Joe V. Selby, Andrew J. Karter, and Assiamira Ferrara have each served as principal investigator or co-investigator for large studies with support from the following:

The Diabetes Research Group at the KPNC Division of Research maintains and annually updates detailed information about all patients with diabetes in the Northern California region of Kaiser Permanente. The number of members with diabetes has grown from ~65,000 in 1993 to over 217,000 active health plan members with diabetes in 2008. New cases of diabetes are identified annually using a passive surveillance system applied to relevant administrative databases.
