Sentinel Surveillance for Chronic Liver Disease
Division of Research Principal Investigator: M. Michele Manos, PhD, MPH
Primary Sources of Funding: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Description: The Kaiser Permanente Alameda County Liver Disease Study (a collaborative study with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) sought to identify and describe the incidence of newly diagnosed cases of chronic liver disease (CLD) in a defined population. Medical information, research laboratory, and interview information were utilized to estimate the relative proportions of disease that6 are attributable to specific etiologies such as viral infection, alcohol, hepatotoxic drugs, and iron disorders. Risk factors for disease, and potential modifiers of disease progression were also evaluated. Incident cases of CLD were enrolled in the Alameda County Liver Study beginning with the index year 12/1998 through index year 6/2001.
