Erica P. Gunderson, PhD, Research Scientist II at the Division of Research (DOR) Kaiser Permanente Northern California, since 1999, is an epidemiologist studying the determinants of obesity in women, and the long-term effects of pregnancy and lactation on women’s health. Dr. Gunderson was a Scholar in the joint UCSF-DOR Program, Building Interdisciplinary Careers in Women’s Health (BIRWCH) from 2001 to 2002. She received the Trudy Bush Fellowship for Cardiovascular Disease in Women’s Health from the American Heart Association in 2003. In 1998, she received her Doctorate degree in Epidemiology and the Warren Winkelstein Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies in Epidemiology from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1981, she earned both Master’s of Public Health and Master’s of Science degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. Before joining DOR, Dr. Gunderson began her career in public health as Director of the nutrition program for a large, randomized, clinical intervention trial, the Prematurity Prevention Project, in Los Angeles County’s prenatal clinics. She has over 14 years of clinical nutrition experience working directly with pregnant populations, including diverse racial and ethnic groups, as well as high-risk pregnancies. She developed care standards for California’s statewide diabetes and pregnancy program (Sweet Success) in the years 1985-1992, and guidelines for nutrition during pregnancy and lactation at national, state, and local levels.

Dr. Gunderson’s research interests include: the epidemiology and determinants of obesity in women, gestational weight gain and health behaviors related to postpartum weight retention and development of obesity, the impact of pregnancy and lactation on long-term changes in cardiometabolic risk factors, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and type 2 diabetes in women. Her publications include: effects of oral contraceptives on iron stores in young women, management of gestational diabetes mellitus, body weight changes during and after pregnancy, lactation and changes in cardiometabolic risk factors from preconception to post-weaning, and the association of childbearing with incidence of type 2 diabetes controlling for preconception.
