Smoking

Cigarette smoking causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. It is implicated in many other cancers as well as lung disease, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke and cataracts, according to the National Institutes of Health. Our research focuses on discovering links between smoking and disease, cessation programs and issues related to pregnancy.

Gender, Obesity, C-Reactive Protein and Oxidative Stress

Epidemiological data and a trial in smokers suggest that Vitamin C supplementation may decrease C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation associated with heart disease. The current study is a randomized trial of vitamin C versus placebo among obese patients with elevated levels of C-reactive protein.

Measuring Prenatal Tobacco Exposure in Newborn Blood Spots

This study will utilize stored biological specimens obtained at midpregnancy maternal screening (serum), from fetal cord blood collected at delivery, and blood spots collected during newborn genetic disease screening. The study will determine how levels of hemoglobin adducts measured in newborn blood spots reflect prenatal tobacco exposure in comparison to cotinine levels measured in midpregnancy maternal serum and in fetal cord blood.

UCSF Center of Excellence on Secondhand Smoke (aka FLOW-FAMRI)

This study seeks to elucidate the factors that determine the risk of developing disability and poor health outcomes among adults with COPD, controlling for degree of pulmonary function impairment; evaluate the impact of specific functional limitations on the risk of developing disability in daily activities and work among relatively young adults with COPD; and elucidate the impact of disability on future adverse health outcomes.
