Back Pain Outcomes Using Longitudinal Data Registry

This proposal describes the Kaiser Permanente, Northern California (KPNC) collaborative involvement in a multi-center, multi-component longitudinal study of low back pain and its treatment. The core activity is the creation of a prospective registry of patients with all types of low back pain. The second component of this project is the conduct of a phase III randomized clinical trial of epidural steroid injections (ESI's) for the treatment of spinal stenosis.

A Direct Observation Study of Provider-Patient Communication About Contraception

This study intends to answer the question of what aspects, if any, of contraceptive counseling lead to better adherence and continuation of methods by women. In addition to asking if improved communication between providers and patients positively impacts contraceptive use, we are interested in answering if provider-patient communication about contraception differs by patient race/ethnicity.

Comparative effectiveness of diabetes prevention strategies in women with GDM

The main goal of this study is to examine the comparative effectiveness of diabetes prevention strategies in women with gestational diabetes on the control of the following conditions: obesity, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and depression in a real-world practices setting. To achieve this goal, we will conduct a cluster randomized lifestyle program with randomization at the medical center level. A telehealth postpartum lifestyle intervention will be compared to printed education materials mailed during the postpartum (i.e. usual care). We will prospectively identify a diverse population of 2500 women with GDM receiving health care during pregnancy at 30 medical centers.

Diet and Activity Promotion among Older Working Adults

The goal of this study is to enhance ALIVE (A Lifestyle Intervention Via Email), which is an email-based diet and physical activity intervention program that was effective in a randomized trial among KP regional employees, to make it particularly relevant for older workers. The study will also test the enhanced program in a randomized trial among workers 55 to 65 and will evaluate its cost effectiveness.
