Development of Clinical Prediction Rules to Predict Risk of Adverse Outcomes in Dizzy Emergency Department Patients
The primary goal of this study is to utilize electronic medical records to follow a cohort of Kaiser Permanente Northern California patients who present to the emergency department with the chief complaint of dizziness for subsequent adverse cerebrovascular and cardiovascular outcomes. Data on these patients will be developed into a clinical prediction rule to assess the risk of adverse outcomes at the initial emergency department presentation.

Fostering Research Collaboration Between UC Davis CTSC and Northern California Kaiser Permanente
The primary goal of this project is to develop a collaborative trauma registry system between UC Davis Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento. This expanded trauma registry system will be used for joint research in the area of traumatic diseases by UC Davis and Kaiser Permanente researchers.

Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Second-Line Anti-Hypertensive Agents
This project examines issues related to collection of standardized data suitable for research from electronic medical records of multiple health care systems that are members of the HMO Research Network. One of the pilot projects is a longitudinal study among patients with hypertension, measuring current treatment practices and the comparative effectiveness of various pharmacotherapies.

Feedback of Treatment Intensification Data to Reduce Cardiovascular Disease Risk
This study assesses whether the use of systematic feedback on need for treatment intensification in patients with poor control of CVD risk factors improves risk factor control. Using a cluster-randomized trial design, this project leverages health information technology, including Kaiser Permanente’s electronic health record.

Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care with a Speech Translation Device
This study evaluates the use of speech translation technology, developed for the U.S. military, by hospital nurses to improve patient safety and quality of care. A computer-based speech translation device, which translates spoken English-to-Spanish and spoken Spanish-to-English is used by English-speaking nurses to help communicate with Spanish-speaking patients on a medical/surgical floor at the Kaiser San Francisco Medical Center.
