Environmental Exposure

Environmental exposure is defined as exposure to potentially harmful chemical, physical, or biological agents in the environment or to environmental factors that may include ionizing radiation, pathogenic organisms, or toxic chemicals, according to the National Institutes of Health. Through a number of key studies and programs, including the Research Program on Genes, Environment, and Health, our researchers are examining how environmental exposure affects health.

Retrospective Assessment of Military Occupations & Neurodegenerative Disease

The specific aims of this project are: (1) to develop exposure assessment methodology for collecting objective information about military occupations and exposures, and (2) to apply the newly developed methodology to determine whether military service is associated with ALS and PD in three completed population-based case-control studies conducted in Northern California and Western Washington State.

Environment, the Perinatal Epigenome and Risk for Autism and Related Disorders

This goal of this study is to understand the relationship between environmental exposures, epigenetics, and risk for autism. Our proposal will address four main themes: (1) the effects of pre and perinatal exposures on genome-wide methylation in mother, father, and child, (2) the familiality of DNAm and DNAm changes, (3) the effects of DNAm on child development and autism risk, and (4) the integration of GWAS SNP and CNV data already funded for this project with these epigenetic data to capture genetic and epigenetic effects in the epidemiology of autism.

Neighborhood Effects on Weight and Diabetes Complications

We propose to evaluate hypothesized relationships between neighborhood-level influences on diabetes self-care, cardiometabolic markers of disease and health outcomes by studying patients with diabetes and uniform access to health care.

SEER Special Study: Improving Understanding of Breast Cancer Health Disparities Using Linked Data Sets

The aim of this study is to 1) compare treatment patterns and receipt among National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines among breast cancer patients from 1998 to 2008 by race/ethnicity and neighborhood socio-economic status 2) compare breast cancer subtype by neighborhood socio-economic status and race ethncicity 3) compare the extent of adherence to guideline treatment by neighborhood socio-economic status 4) examine impact of neighborhood socio-economic status, and access factors, breast cancer subtype and adherence to guidline treatment on breast cancer survival.

Maternal and Infant Genetic Contributions to Preterm Birth: the Inflammatory Response

This study examines how prenatal exposure to environmental triggers is associated with premature birth as mediated by individual expression of host metabolites and examination of the potential interaction of prenatal environmental exposures and genetic variation in the expression of inflammatory response regulation in relation to premature birth.

Epidemiology of Dystonia in a Multi-ethnic Population

This study addresses the three major deficiencies in the current understanding of Primary Torsion Dystonia (PTD) based on incidence on a multi-ethnic population, examining the distribution of genetic determinants, and investigating environmental factors affecting disease expression on risk.
