Lactation and Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes in CARDIA Women
The goals of our study are to prospectively examine whether longer duration of lactation is associated with development of type 2 DM in women of reproductive age during the 25-year CARDIA study period (1986-2011) and assess changes in risk factors.

Feasibility and Potential Impact of Birth Cohort-Based Hepatitis C Screening
The goal of this feasibility study is to estimate the potential public health and medical care impact of recommended changes in CDC guidelines that all "baby boomers" be screened for hepatitis C regardless of risk, and to design a program evaluation in one to three Kaiser Permanente Northern California facilities.

Long-Term Morbidity and Mortality for Liver Transplant Recipients: Understanding the Causes of Death and Identifying Modifiable Risk Factors to Improve Survival (formerly "Outcomes of Liver Transplantation")
The goal is to determine the long-term outcomes of liver transplant patients, their causes of death, and potential morbidities (renal failure, diabetes, etc.).

Prenatal and Early Life Predictors of Pediatric Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease
The goal of this study is to identify prenatal and early life exposures that predict development of pediatric onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); identifying modifiable, early life risk factors is imperative for developing interventions to prevent IBD in susceptible individuals.

A Cross-sectional Study of Hepatitis C Patients in a Managed Care Setting
This descriptive study characterizes the approximately 21,000 hepatitis C patients who were members of the Kaiser Permanente Northern California health plan in December 2008 and were identified by the KP Viral Hepatitis Registry. Demographic, general medical, antiviral treatment, liver disease markers, and liver disease outcomes are being evaluated.

Predictors of Severe Outcomes in Hepatitis B Patients
This project, using electronic data maintained in the Viral Hepatitis Registry for patients with chronic hepatitis B, seeks to determine the rates of mortality (all cause and liver disease) and specific liver disease outcomes (decompensated cirrhosis, hepatoma, transplant).

Barrett's Esophagus: Risk Factors in Women
This study utilizes pooling of several existing case-control studies of Barrett's esophagus (a condition that is a preneoplastic risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma) to evaluate several risk factors for Barrett's esophagus among women and contrast them with men.

The Effects of Diet on Barrett's Esophagus and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
This case control study of more than 950 subjects investigates various potential risk factors on the risk of Barrett's esophagus, a precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma. The rate of this cancer is the fastest growing in Western countries, and identification of risk factors are crucial in preventing the occurrence of this highly lethal malignancy.
