A Randomized Multicenter Clinical Trial of Unruptured Brain AVMs (ARUBA)
The primary goal is to determine whether medical management improves long-term outcomes of patients with unruptured BAVMs compared to interventional therapy (with endovascular procedures, neurosurgery, or radiotherapy, alone or in combination). The trial has been designed to test whether medical management or interventional therapy will reduce the risk of death or stroke (due to hemorrhage or infarction) by at least 40% (an absolute magnitude of about 7.5% over 5 years).

Epilepsy after Pediatric Stroke: A Population-based Study
This is retrospective cohort study with the overall objective of determining the incidence and predictors of epilepsy after stroke in neonates and children. We will use a previously identified cohort of 492 children with stroke in the KP population (1993-2007). We will identify cases with epilepsy through electronic searches of diagnostic databases, and confirm the epilepsy diagnosis through chart review.

Phase II of PAC Outcome Monitoring Study
This study focuses on the functional outcomes of a cohort of 270 patients hospitalized after a stroke, with measurements of function in mobility, self-care and applied cognition at discharge from various levels of care across a 6-month period.

Effect of Race-ethnicity on Anti-Hypertensive Therapy and Blood Pressure Control in Patients with Ischemic Stroke
The specific aims of this study are to: 1) determine in the QUISP cohort the factors that could explain why African Americans have poorer blood pressure control compared to other races by examining potential barriers among patients with acute ischemic stroke in a large racially-diverse cohort, and 2) to determine to what extent failure to control blood pressure could account for the difference in 6 month post-stroke risk in recurrent stroke among the different races.

Development of Clinical Prediction Rules to Predict Risk of Adverse Outcomes in Dizzy Emergency Department Patients
The primary goal of this study is to utilize electronic medical records to follow a cohort of Kaiser Permanente Northern California patients who present to the emergency department with the chief complaint of dizziness for subsequent adverse cerebrovascular and cardiovascular outcomes. Data on these patients will be developed into a clinical prediction rule to assess the risk of adverse outcomes at the initial emergency department presentation.

The Burden of Childhood Stroke: Financial Costs and Health-related Quality of Life
This study measures utility scores for childhood/neonatal stroke from "societal" and from "patient" perspectives by interviewing parents of "at risk" children and parents of children that have suffered stroke.

Is Stroke a Late Effect of Chemotherapy?
This study will use the patient and Virtual Data Warehouse resources of the Cancer Research Network to estimate incidence of stroke by treatment modality among patients diagnosed from 1994 to 2003 with bladder, female breast, colorectal, Hodgkin's lymphoma, adult leukemia multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, ovarian and testicular cancers.

The Role of Infection in Childhood Stroke
This study determines whether infection is a risk factor for childhood stroke, including both first stroke and stroke recurrence, based on medical record review and structured interview of stroke cases (or surrogates) and age-matched controls randomly selected.
