Cancer

According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly 1.5 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in 2009. Through such studies as Pathways and partnerships such as the Cancer Research Network, our researchers investigate many aspects of the disease, including its determinants and how best to treat it. Cancer research at DOR includes prevention and screening, research into causes, from genes to second-hand smoke to the environment, the effectiveness and outcome of treatment, and the impact of the disease on quality of life.

Comparing Characteristics of CRN Melanoma Cases to the National SEER Database

The goal is to determine if melanoma incidence and mortality trends as well as patient, tumor, and care characteristics in HMO settings (KPNC and HFHS) are reflective of the national population, and to adjust for difference if they exist, so inferences can be made about the generalizability of study findings and congruency of melanoma trends.

CRN Pilot: Cancer Risk Factors for Young Adults

For this one-year pilot study, the two data-contributing sites we will identify eligible active members of the health plan beginning 1/1/2007 who are 20-39 years old. Each site will obtain IRB approval and Data Use Agreements, and prepare programs to meet the specific aims of the pilot study: 1) to describe the completeness of data on risk factors, confounders and effect modifiers to study the association between obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and common cancers in young adults at KP Southern and Northern California, and 2) to build a prospective cohort of young adults to investigate risk factors in the young adults which will serve as a potential CRN resource for other seeking to collaborate on studies.

Statins & Lymphoid Malignancy Risk in a Large Multi-site Population-based Cohort

In multiple sites participating in the CRN, our specific goals are to: 1. Quantify the association between statin use and the risk of a lymphoma, overall and by specific statin and lymphoma subtype. Comparison with use of other antilipemics (i.e., anion exchange resins, fibrates, nicotinic acid, and ezetimib) will also be assessed as an internal comparison. 2. To assess the association between use of statins among patients at high-risk for lymphoma.
