Autism

Autism is a complex developmental disability that causes problems with social interaction and communication.  Through Study to explore Early Development (SEED), Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI), and similar studies, our researchers examine the genetic and environmental factors that may cause autism and the treatment of autism and other developmental disabilities.

Diverse Autism Registry for Effectiveness Studies

The goal of the study is to create a large, comprehensive and dynamic autism spectrum disorder (ASD) registry across several integrated health systems.  The first phase of the study will look at variability across the participating health plans in the prevalence of ASD, in medical and psychiatric co-morbidities in the ASD population, and in the use of psychotropic medications to treat children and adolescents with ASDs.  The second phase will look at different treatment approaches, and treatment burdens for families of children with ASD, and parental perceptions of the efficacy of different treatments.  During the second phase of the study, parents of children diagnosed with an ASD who are Kaiser Permanente members will be invited to complete a Web survey and contribute a blood or saliva sample for future ASD research.

Prenatal and Neonatal Biologic Markers for Autism (EMA)

The proposed study will continue an investigation of prenatal and newborn biologic markers for autism previously funded by NIH. The goal of the new study is to further investigate the role of prenatal and newborn immunologic factors, genetic susceptibility factors, and environmental exposures by evaluating stored prenatal (maternal) and newborn blood specimens for children with autism, children with other developmental disabilities, and population controls.  We anticipate that the results of this study will contribute to identifying factors that increase the risk for autism and may lead to eventual prevention of autism and related disorders.

Environment, the Perinatal Epigenome and Risk for Autism and Related Disorders

This goal of this study is to understand the relationship between environmental exposures, epigenetics, and risk for autism. Our proposal will address four main themes: (1) the effects of pre and perinatal exposures on genome-wide methylation in mother, father, and child, (2) the familiality of DNAm and DNAm changes, (3) the effects of DNAm on child development and autism risk, and (4) the integration of GWAS SNP and CNV data already funded for this project with these epigenetic data to capture genetic and epigenetic effects in the epidemiology of autism.

Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P Network)

The AIR-P Network will: conduct research on evidence-based practices for interventions to improve the physical health and well-being of children and adolescents with ASD and other developmental disabilities; develop evidence-based guidelines and validate tools for interventions to improve the health care of children and adolescents with ASD and other developmental disabilities; and disseminate critical information on its research findings, guidelines developed, and validated tools to health professionals and the public, especially families impacted by ASD and other developmental disabilities.

Early Autism Risks Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI) Network

This Autism Center of Excellence (ACE) Network is investigating possible risk factors and biologic indicators for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) during prenatal, neonatal, and early postnatal development. A prospective study will enroll 1,200 mothers of children with autism at the start of a new pregnancy and follow them and the new baby through 36 months post-delivery.

Cooperative Multi-center Program for Research and Treatment of Autism (ATN)

This project aims to join the Autism Treatment Network, enroll a large sample of children with autism from the well-established programs at Kaiser Permanente, and advance the mission of combining outstanding research and clinical care by conducting studies to evaluate the use and effectiveness of medical treatments and complementary and alternative therapies, which have a high prevalence of use in this population.
