Characteristics of chronic hepatitis B patients in a managed care setting

Describe the virologic measurements, immunologic status (HBV related), liver disease conditions, demographics and treatment histories of a current cohort of adult members with chronic hepatitis B. In a subset of patients receiving antiviral therapy for 2 years or more, assess liver disease markers, comorbidities and severe outcomes.

Hepatitis C Cooperative Research Centers (U19)

The project will address the immunological and immunogenetic correlates of response to antiviral therapy for HCV. Two distinct but complimentary laboratory projects will study the innate and adaptive responses in blood samples from both a retrospective cohort of patients previously treated, and a prospecitve cohort of patients during the first 12 weeks of therapy.

Quality and Efficiency of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Reporting to Cancer Registries

This SEER Rapid Response Surveillance Study will investigate hepatoma under-reporting in Kaiser Permanente Northern California and identify key patient characteristics that enable efficient ascertainment of hepatocellular carcinoma cases that are missed by usual cancer surveillance methods.

Feasibility and Potential Impact of Birth Cohort-Based Hepatitis C Screening

The goal of this feasibility study is to estimate the potential public health and medical care impact of recommended changes in CDC guidelines that all "baby boomers" be screened for hepatitis C regardless of risk, and to design a program evaluation in one to three Kaiser Permanente Northern California facilities.

Health care utilization and costs associated with antiviral treatment for hepatitis C

The goals of this study, which uses data in the Viral Hepatitis Registry for HCV patients treated 2002-2007, are to assess health care utilization and associated costs for one year prior to, during, and up to 5 years after treatment for those with successful versus unsuccessful treatment; and also to assess the effect of drug exposure duration on the incidence of side-effects (e.g. anemia, depression) and the costs associated with such during treatment courses with PEG-IFN/ribavirin.

Principal Investigator: Manos, Michele

A Cross-sectional Study of Hepatitis C Patients in a Managed Care Setting

This descriptive study characterizes the approximately 21,000 hepatitis C patients who were members of the Kaiser Permanente Northern California health plan in December 2008 and were identified by the KP Viral Hepatitis Registry. Demographic, general medical, antiviral treatment, liver disease markers, and liver disease outcomes are being evaluated.

Predictors of Severe Outcomes in Hepatitis B Patients

This project, using electronic data maintained in the Viral Hepatitis Registry for patients with chronic hepatitis B, seeks to determine the rates of mortality (all cause and liver disease) and specific liver disease outcomes (decompensated cirrhosis, hepatoma, transplant).
