Dr. Herrinton received her doctoral training at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, and her master's training at Harvard University. Before her training in epidemiology, she was an environmental health scientist, consulting to industry and government on health risk assessment. She also served as a high school science and math teacher through the Peace Corps in Swaziland, Africa. Dr. Herrinton directs a program in inflammatory bowel disease that is focused on epidemiology, quality of care, and outcomes. She also serves as site principal investigator on several research consortia organized under the HMO Research Network, including the Centers for Education and Research in Therapeutics. She leads and participates in numerous collaborative projects concerned primarily with health care effectiveness, as well as patient-reported quality of life. She has conducted training in collaboration, and has mentored doctoral students, physicians, and newer investigators in research and career development. Her studies have involved data collection through linkage, medical record review, patient survey, provider survey, and qualitative approaches such as guided interviewing and focus groups. Data Mining Electronic Health Records for Drug Adverse Events

When a new pharmaceutical drug enters the market, there are always questions about its effectiveness and safety profile in comparison with other related drugs; this project will use two data mining methods (the tree-based scan statistic and Bayesian gamma Poisson shrinkage) to search for unexpected drug adverse events.
