Joe Terdiman, MD, PhD, is a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research; and an assistant professor in the School of Optometry, University of California, Berkeley. He has been with the Division of Research since 1969, first as a medical information scientist, and then as an assistant to the director prior to becoming a research scientist. Dr. Terdiman’s research interests include medical informatics, technology assessment, cardiovascular epidemiology, and cardiovascular and visual physiology.

Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care with a Speech Translation Device

This study evaluates the use of speech translation technology, developed for the U.S. military, by hospital nurses to improve patient safety and quality of care. A computer-based speech translation device, which translates spoken English-to-Spanish and spoken Spanish-to-English is used by English-speaking nurses to help communicate with Spanish-speaking patients on a medical/surgical floor at the Kaiser San Francisco Medical Center.
