Gerald DeLorenze, PhD, MA, is a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. Dr. Lorenze’s research background has included epidemiologic studies of treatment outcomes and medication errors among HIV-infected patients, adverse birth outcomes associated with tobacco smoke exposure, and glioma and breast cancers. He is currently principal investigator of a study of diabetes incidence among users of atypical antipsychotic agents, a study of the infectious etiology associated with multiple sclerosis, and a molecular/genetic epidemiologic study of adult glioma. He also serves as co-investigator in a study of prenatal and neonatal biomarkers of autism and a study of maternal and infant genetic contributions to preterm birth.

Primary Research Interests:

  • HIV/AIDS epidemiology and health services utilization
  • Reproductive epidemiology
  • Neurological epidemiology
  • Biostatistical methods
  • Cancer epidemiology.

Current Position(s):

  • Research Scientist I, Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California

Measuring Prenatal Tobacco Exposure in Newborn Blood Spots

This study will utilize stored biological specimens obtained at midpregnancy maternal screening (serum), from fetal cord blood collected at delivery, and blood spots collected during newborn genetic disease screening. The study will determine how levels of hemoglobin adducts measured in newborn blood spots reflect prenatal tobacco exposure in comparison to cotinine levels measured in midpregnancy maternal serum and in fetal cord blood.

Incidence and Risk Profiles of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)

The study estimates the annual incidence of MRSA in Kaiser Permanente Northern California HIV-infected patients during the years 1994 to 2006. These estimates will be compared to incidence rates in the general, HIV-negative patient population during the same time period.

Maternal and Infant Genetic Contributions to Preterm Birth: the Inflammatory Response

This study examines how prenatal exposure to environmental triggers is associated with premature birth as mediated by individual expression of host metabolites and examination of the potential interaction of prenatal environmental exposures and genetic variation in the expression of inflammatory response regulation in relation to premature birth.

An Epidemiologic Study of Antipsychotic Use and Diabetes

This is multi-site cohort study estimates the incidence of diabetes among adult users of second-generation antipsychotics (SGA) including aripiprazole, olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, ziprasidone and clozapine.
