COMPARISONS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA KAISER PERMANENTE MEMBERS WITH THE GENERAL COMMUNITY

Kaiser Permanente researchers are frequently asked to show how the Kaiser Permanente membership compares with the community at large. To study this, we used California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) data for respondents residing in Northern California to compare sociodemographic and health-related characteristics of the respondent group that self-identified as Kaiser Permanente members with three different Northern California populations: (1) those with any kind of health insurance, (2) those with any health insurance except Medi-Cal (Medicaid) only, and (3) all Northern California adults including Kaiser Permanente members. An additional set of analyses compares statistics about the Kaiser Permanente adult membership derived from CHIS data with similar statistics derived from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California adult Member Health Survey (MHS). Comparison reports for adults aged 25-79 were done using 2003 CHIS data (along with 2002 MHS data), 2007 CHIS data (along with 2008 MHS data), and 2009 CHIS data. CHIS 2009 data were used to compare seniors (ages 65-90) who identified as Kaiser Permanente members with insured seniors not covered by Kaiser Permanente and with all Northern California seniors.
