In Memoriam
Barry Miller, PhD
The Division of Research lost a colleague and dear friend in 2008. We want to acknowledge the work of Dr. Barry Miller, who joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1994 and became the Division of Research's administrative director in 2003.
Dr. Miller was born on Dec. 25, 1942 in Manhattan, N.Y. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1965 and received his BS in psychology. Then he went on to obtain his master's degree in psychology from Villanova University in 1967 and his PhD from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1971.
Dr. Miller published more than 60 articles and/or chapters in such areas as schizophrenia, cross-cultural psychiatry, psychosocial correlates for cardiovascular disease, as well as managed care. He had held several editorial positions and served as associate editor of the Journal of Behavioral Health Services and Research. He served as principal investigator or program director for more than 30 grants.
Dr. Miller was a member of the Philadelphia Major's Commission on Health, the Pennsylvania Academic Commission on Technology Development, the Governor's Science and Technology Task Force for Pennsylvania's Economic Development Partnership, as well as a member of the University City Sciences Center's Council of Science and Technology Officers.
Previously he served as the administrative director of The Permanente Medical Group Research Institute. Prior to these appointments he served as the Director for Research and Technology Development at the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Miller also served as the associate dean for research at the Medical College of Pennsylvania from 1981 to 1990.
He brought a level of energy and a passion for living that enriched us all. To honor him, the Division of Research has dedicated its 2008 Research Report and a conference room at the 2000 Broadway location to him.
