Carlos Iribarren MD, MPH, PhD, has been a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research since 1997; and an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco since 1998. Dr. Iribarren is a clinical epidemiologist and his current research interests include the genetic determinants of coronary disease, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, and psychosocial factors in coronary disease. Dr. Iribarren is a current member of the American Heart Association Behavioral Science, Epidemiology and Prevention Study Section, and a Consultant for the Health Care Advisors. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, from 1989 through 1994. Dr. Iribarren has published 36 peer-reviewed articles (first author of 30) ranging from the health consequences of low-blood cholesterol, body weight change and fluctuations, or cigar smoking to the prognosis of calcification of the aortic arch, hostility and coronary calcification, and heart failure in diabetes.

Current Position(s):

The Overlap Syndrome of COPD and OSA: Determinants of Health Status and Outcomes

The FLOW Study also seeks to examine factors contributing to the development of disability among COPD patients. The FLOW Study is currently measuring respiratory impairment factors while subjects are awake, utilizing such measures as spirometry and oxygen saturation.

Protein and Lipid Biomarkers for Prospective Prediction of Type 2 Diabetes: a CARDIA Ancillary Study

The overall goal of this proposal is to investigate the ability of a panel of protein and lipid biomarkers to predict the future incidence of diabetes in a population based study which includes both Caucasians and African Americans.

SPIROMICS: Clinical Centers

The goals of this study are to: 1) identify subpopulations of subjects with COPD who are likely to be similar with respect to molecular mechanism of disease, and 2) identify and validate indices of disease severity and progression, which may be useful as intermediate outcome measures in clinical trials.

Descriptive Epidemiology of Short QT Interval

This study seeks to better understand the incidence, prevalence, comorbidities, and natural history of short QT in a representative population to help guide clinical decision making, fill gaps in knowledge in the general medical community, and mitigate potential risk.

Physical and Social Environmental Factors in Adult Asthma

This study analyzes the cumulative risk of combined physical environmental and social environmental factors that affect asthma outcomes, giving particular emphasis to relationships that might be amenable to intervention/secondary-tertiary prevention strategies designed to improve outcomes.

The Impact of Secondhand Smoke Exposure on COPD Outcomes

This study evaluates the role of education in the incidence of diabetic complications in a large, well-characterized population within an integrated, managed care setting (Kaiser Permanente).

UCSF Center of Excellence on Secondhand Smoke (aka FLOW-FAMRI)

This study seeks to elucidate the factors that determine the risk of developing disability and poor health outcomes among adults with COPD, controlling for degree of pulmonary function impairment; evaluate the impact of specific functional limitations on the risk of developing disability in daily activities and work among relatively young adults with COPD; and elucidate the impact of disability on future adverse health outcomes.

Asthma and the Risk of Anaphylaxis

This study aims to define the incidence of anaphylaxis among adults and adolescents with asthma; define whether anaphylaxis is more common in asthma than in a matched control population; and elucidate risk factors for anaphylaxis among adults and adolescents with asthma.

Function, Living, Outcomes and Work in COPD (FLOW)

This study seeks to elucidate the factors that determine the risk of developing disability and poor health outcomes among adults with COPD, controlling for degree of pulmonary function impairment; to evaluate the impact of specific functional limitations on the risk of developing disability in daily activities and work among relatively young adults with COPD;and also to elucidate the impact of disability on future adverse health outcomes.
