Andrew L. Avins, MD, MPH, is a research scientist at the Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California; he holds appointments in the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco, where he remains active in the clinical and teaching programs. Dr. Avins is a board-certified general internist. His research interests include musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases, preventive medicine (with an emphasis on screening and treatment policies), complementary and alternative medicine (with an emphasis on clinical trials of alternative therapies), and research methodologies.

A New Translational Tool for Studying the Role of Breathing in Meditation

The present study investigates the effects of an eight-week mindful breathing intervention on 24-hr blood pressure, breathing rate, and an index of pCO2, the amount of CO2 in expired air (PetCO2).

Back Pain Outcomes Using Longitudinal Data Registry

This proposal describes the Kaiser Permanente, Northern California (KPNC) collaborative involvement in a multi-center, multi-component longitudinal study of low back pain and its treatment. The core activity is the creation of a prospective registry of patients with all types of low back pain. The second component of this project is the conduct of a phase III randomized clinical trial of epidural steroid injections (ESI's) for the treatment of spinal stenosis.

Steroid Delivery in Acute Herniated Lumbar Disc with Radiculopathy

This study is a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a short tapering course of an oral corticosteroid for the treatment of patients with a radiculopathy secondary to an acute herniated lumbar disc.
