Ameena T. Ahmed, MD, MPH, is a staff scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research; assistant clinical professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF); and internal medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente Richmond Medical Center and the Human Rights Clinic at Alameda County Medical Center. She received her MD from the University of Chicago, and completed residencies in internal medicine at Stanford University and general preventive medicine and public health at the University of California, San Francisco and Berkeley. Dr. Ahmed’s research interest is in exploring social disparities in diabetes and obesity. She has extensive clinical experience working with survivors of trauma, and also has research interest in the health effects of violence.

Outcomes of Bariatric Surgery among Patients with Bipolar Disorder

This retrospective cohort study will examine bariatric surgery outcomes among 5155 patients (1.6% with bipolar disorder, 30% with major depressive disorder, 68% with no affective disorder) who underwent bariatric surgery between 2006 and 2009 in Kaiser Permanente Northern California.

Effect of Intimate Partner Violence on Women's Health Care Utilization

This project will (1) Determine the patterns of current health care utilization (mental health, primary care, specialty care, emergency department, inpatient, pharmacy, laboratory and radiology) and costs among women who are and are not experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV); (2) test the hypothesis that  women currently experiencing IPV have lower rates of receipt of routine preventive care (PAP smear, mammogram, CRC screening) than those not experiencing IPV; and  (3) determine how clinical identification of IPV-affected women affects health care utilization.
