Ai Kubo, MPH, PhD, is a staff scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. Her research interest focuses on examining the roles of lifestyle factors, such as diet and physical activity, on the risks of chronic diseases, particularly cancer. Dr. Kubo is also a certified yoga instructor, and is currently conducting a pilot intervention study to evaluate the effect of yoga for heart failure patients in Richmond and Oakland. She received her PhD in epidemiology at Columbia University, and MPH at University of California, Berkeley.

The Effects of Diet on Barrett's Esophagus and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

This case control study of more than 950 subjects investigates various potential risk factors on the risk of Barrett's esophagus, a precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma. The rate of this cancer is the fastest growing in Western countries, and identification of risk factors are crucial in preventing the occurrence of this highly lethal malignancy.
