Under the direction of Joe V. Selby, MD, MPH, the division's management team guides research and administration for the staff of approximately 500 and more than 250 ongoing studies.

Research directors oversee the strategic direction of their respective areas: Etiology and Prevention, Health Services Research, and Clinical Studies. Administrative directors oversee compliance, fiscal oversight, support services (e.g., library, data entry, medical record analysis), space management, procurement, information technology, and adherence to Kaiser Permanente's codes of conduct.

The Division of Research lost a colleague and dear friend in October 2008. We want to acknowledge the work of Barry Miller, PhD, who joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1994 and became the division's administrative director in 2003. Barry brought a level of energy, an exemplary professionalism, a sense of humor, and a passion for living that enriched the daily work lives of everyone with whom he interacted.
