The Division of Research (DOR) is loosely divided into three research sections: Clinical Research, Etiology and Prevention Research, and Health Care Effectiveness Research. Each section houses staff that includes investigators, programmer analysts, project coordinators, and research assistants. The Clinical Research section also includes clinical staff comprised of licensed vocational nurses, medical assistants, nurse practitioners, nutritionists phlebotomists, and registered nurses.
Investigators in each research section identify topics in his or her specific area and craft research hypotheses from which proposals for funding consideration by a federal, foundation, association, or industry sponsor are prepared. If funding is received, the investigator brings together a study team to design the implementation and data analysis methodology for the project. During the course of the study, preliminary data and final data may be presented at regional and national conferences, such as the American Heart Association or Society for Epidemiologic Research. Upon completion of the study, the investigator or a team member prepares the results for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
