Clinical Research performed at the DOR includes observational studies and clinical trials. In 1999, 12 clinical research projects with a total annual budget of more than $3.3 million (16% if the total DOR budget) were conducted at DOR. Major observational studies currently conducted include, among others, the Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors In Young Adults and Study of Women's Health Across the Nation studies. Examples of clinical trials are the Women’s Health Initiative and the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene study. Clinical research projects are conducted in three separate clinic areas at DOR, each area having a reception room, blood processing laboratories, and exam and interviewing rooms. Four low-temperature (-70 degree C) freezers are available for biological specimen storage, as well at –20 degree C freezers and refrigerators. A large variety of physiological measurement equipment is also available for use by clinical research studies. Clinical research is led by DOR Associate Director for Clinical Research, Stephen Sidney, MD, MPH.
